IYARKKAI

 A POEM BY

IYARKKAI

Translated into English by latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

THE RAIN SHARED A FEW THINGS

How many a leaf have to cross

before arriving here

That’s why

on reaching the ground

thoroughly fatigued

lies all stretched _

The Rain.

***

The Rain that stops with the leaves

seeing the droplet brimming on the grass-blade

laments

‘O you have gone that far

Tell it

Please tell it all’

But what at all can a lone word do

being confronted with such a massive

silence.

***

Upon the soft little heat of hatching

with a sense of guilt

falls the Rain.

***

Devarasu who runs again and again

placing vessels

looks at the entrance.

Giving a thorough waterwash to the

palymra fruit-wagon

the Rain seeks pardon.

***

The ordeal of somehow shoving and

bringing along

the hapless puppy that keeps moaning,

and leave it at last inside

the flower-shop wooden box

goes well beyond midnight

to the Rain.
