Even after the eyesight had dimmed

Grandpa would lift water from the well using ‘kamalai’

Despite the everlasting joint-pain

Grandma would pluck off weeds

Under the burning sun

Father would be ploughing

With dust falling into the eyes

Mother would be winnowing in the field

With the sky failing

Bank-loan strangling

Field changing hands

Time rolling by

With pain unbearable

Daily

I go past

the ‘Ad-board’

bearing the big bold letters

‘PLOTS FOR SALE’

கண்பார்வை மங்கிய பிறகும்

கமலை இறைப்பார் தாத்தா

தீராத மூட்டு வலியிலும்

களையெடுப்பாள் பாட்டி

சுட்டெரிக்கும் வெயிலில்

கலப்பை பிடிப்பார் அப்பா

கண்களில் தூசிவிழ

களத்தில் தூற்றுவாள் அம்மா

வானம் பொய்க்க

வங்கிக்கடன் மென்னியை நெரிக்க

கழனி கைமாற

காலம் உருண்டோட

'பிளாட்டுகள் விற்பனைக்கு'

எனும் பெரும் எழுத்துகள் சுமந்த

விளம்பரப்பதாகையை

அனுதினம் வலியோடு

கடந்தபடி இருக்கிறேன் நான்.

THE SEA AND THE BOY

The drawing teacher gave his students the homework of

drawing the sea and colouring it.

The next day the students submitted

their respective drawings.

The teacher scrutinized and evaluated

each one of them.

When he came to the drawing of the new student -

an inhabitant of Dhanushkodi

the sea he had drawn shook him to the core.

Calling the student concerned

when he enquired,

“Our sea would be like this only”,

answered the boy.

“It’s alright, but, can sea be in this shade?’

The eyes of the boy offering a teardrop

in response to the teacher’s query

wore the same shade of the sea.

ஓவிய ஆசிரியர் தம் மாணவச் செல்வங்களுக்கு வீட்டுப்பாடமாய் கடல்

வரைந்து வண்ணம் தீட்டிவருமாறு பணித்தார்

மறுதினம் மாணவச்

செல்வங்கள் அவரவர் தீட்டிய சித்திரங்களை மேசைமீது சமர்ப்பித்தனர்

ஓவியங்கள் அனைத்தையும் உற்றுநோக்கி மதிப்பிட்ட ஆசிரியர்

புதிதாய் வகுப்பில் சேர்ந்த தனுஷ் கோடி மாணவன் வரைந்த கடலின் சித்திரம் கண்டு

அதிர்ந்து போனார்

அவனை அழைத்து அதுகுறித்து வினவிய பொழுது ‘எங்கள் கடல் இப்படித்தான்இருக்கும்’ என்றான்

‘அது போகட்டும் கடலின் நிறம்

இப்படியா இருக்கும் ?’ என்ற ஆசிரியருக்கு மறுமொழியாய்

கண்ணீர்த்துளியைத் தந்த அவன் கண்களின் நிறமும் அவன் தீட்டிய கடலின்

நிறமும் ஒன்றுபோலவே இருந்தது.
