MOTHER’S WINGS

That Mother had wings before her marriage

I came to know only from grandma.

She had flown with all the sparrows

and seen all the trees.

It was on a day when there were trees no more

that she consented to marry Father.

Father had the habit of scratching the inside of ear

with cock-feather

right from his boyhood days.

As the hens in the house afflicted with disease

died one after another

Father

plucked off a quill from Mother’s wing.

Blood dripping Mother fell down

Crouched; collapsed.

Whenever his ears itched

Father’s fingers moved towards

Mother’s feathers

Even now

while in the bathroom

stroking the scars that bear testimony

to the being of wings long ago

Mother weeps in silence unbearable.

அம்மாவின் சிறகுகள்

-

திருமணத்திற்கு முன்பு

அம்மாவுக்கு சிறகுகள் இருந்தன என்பது

பாட்டி சொல்லித்தான் தெரியும்

அவள் ஊர்க்குருவிகளோடு பறந்து

அத்தனை மரங்களையும் கண்டிருக்கிறாள்

மரங்கள் தீர்ந்துவிட்டிருந்த ஒருநாளில்தான்

அப்பாவை மணக்க ஒப்புக்கொண்டாள்

அப்பாவுக்கு

கோழி இறகால் காது குடையும் பழக்கம்

சிறுவயதிலிருந்தே இருந்தது

வீட்டிலிருந்த கோழிகள் சீக்கு வந்து

ஒன்றன்பின் ஒன்றாக இறந்துபோகவே

அப்பா

அம்மாவின் சிறகிலிருந்து ஒரு இறகை

வெடுக்கெனப் பிடுங்கினார்

ரத்தம் சொட்டச் சொட்ட

அம்மா அப்படியே சுருண்டு விழுந்தாள்

காது குறுகுறுக்கும் போதெல்லாம்

அப்பாவின் விரல்கள்

அம்மாவின் சிறகை நோக்கி நகர்ந்தன

இப்போதும்

அம்மா குளியலறை போகும்போது

இறகுகள் இருந்ததற்கு சாட்சியாய் விளங்கும்

வடுக்களைத் தடவிக்கொண்டு

ஊமை அழுவாச்சி அழுகிறாள்.
