“Amma” called she.

Yes indeed, she did call Amma

I who came that way observed.

Her Mother didn’t come out.

She too moved not a bit.

Mother who had thrashed her and chased her away

five years ago

would undergo a change of heart

with the passage of time,

Won’t she?

She called out two more times

Even then her Mother didn’t come.

The baby at her hip cried.

I saw the mother emerging.

அம்மா என்று கூப்பிட்டாள்

ஆம், அம்மா என்றுதான் கூப்பிட்டாள்

நடந்துவந்த நானும் கவனித்தேன்

அம்மா வெளியே வரவில்லை

அவளும் அந்த இடத்தைவிட்டுப் அகலவில்லை

ஐந்து ஆண்டுக்கு முன்னர் அடித்துத் துரத்திய அம்மா

ஒரு நாள் மனம் மாறுவாள்தானே

மேலும் இரண்டுமுறை கூப்பிட்டாள்

அப்போதும் அம்மா வரவில்லை

இடுப்பிலிருந்த குழந்தை அழுதது

அம்மா வெளியே வந்ததைக் கண்டேன்.
