It is just that, O, Mercy-Personified

Though a bit delayed

I uttered a Truth.

That Moment that was shamed the most _

that thorn that kept on pricking

and scratching my veins the worst _

I transmitted it into language

I did just that, O the King of Justice

For this

You ask my very life as sacrifice.

Well, I’ll give

But, I will ask just one thing from thee.

Will you give me?

You too would be having a truth to say

Along with the sand hauled and thrown into the pit

wherein I am dumped

just throw that too.

Nothing else I have to ask of thee

O Mercy- Personified.

வேறொன்றும் இல்லை பராபரமே

சற்று காலம் தாழ்ந்து விட்டிருந்தாலும்

ஒரே ஒரு உண்மையை சொன்னேன்

சிறுமைப் படுத்தப்பட்ட அந்த நொடியை

நாளங்களை சதா கீறியபடியிருந்த முள்ளை

மொழிக்கு மடைமாற்றினேன்

அவ்வளவு தான் பராபரமே

அதற்கென் வாழ்வை பலி கேட்கிறீர்கள்

சரி தருகிறேன்

ஆனால் நான் ஒன்றை கேட்பேன்

தருவீர்களா?

உங்களுக்கும் சொல்வதற்கொரு உண்மையிருக்கும்

என்னை இறக்கிய குழியில் அள்ளிப் போடும் மண்ணோடு

அதையும் போட்டு விடுங்கள்

வேறொன்றும் இல்லை பராபரமே

//*ஒரு கவிதை கவிஞரின் சமகாலத்தவருக்குத் தரும் வாசகப்பிரதிக்கும் எதிர்காலத்தில் தரக்கூடிய வாசகப்பிரதிக்கும் இடையே நிறைய வேறுபாடு இருக்குமென்று தோன்றுகிறது.

ஒரு கவிதையின் கவிஞரும் கவிதைசொல்லியும் ஒருவரே என்று சொல்லமுடியாவிட்டாலும் இருவேறுபட்டவர்கள் என்றும் திட்டவட்டமாகச் சொல்லவியலாது.

மீ டூ இயக்கத்தின் பின்னணியில், பல வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு தன்னிடம் ஒருவர் தவறாக நடந்துகொள்ள முயன்றதை இப்போது வெளியே சொன்னதற்காக மூன்று வருடங்களாக நீதிமன்றத்திற்கு இழுக்கடிக் கப்பட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார் லீனா.

வழக்கின் வழி அவர் வெளிநாடு செல்வது தடைசெய்யப் பட்டிருக்கிறது.

கவிஞர் லீனா மணிமேகலையோடு கருத்துரீதியாக நான் முரண்படும் இடங்கள் நிறையவே உண்டு. ஆனால், அவர் ஒரு சிறந்த கவி என்பதை மறுக்கவே முடியாது.

பல வருடங்களாக மனதை உறுத்திக் கொண்டிருந்த ஓர் உண்மையைப் பேசியதற்காக அவருடைய இயக்கம் பலவகையிலும் முடக்கப்படுவதை நான் வன்மையாகக் கண்டிக்கிறேன்.

சமகாலத்தில் இருப்பதால் இந்தக் கவிதை அந்த அலைக் கழிப்பைப் பற்றிப் பேசுகிறது என்பதைப் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடிகிறது. லீனா தன்னை நாத்திகவாதி என்று அறிவித் துக்கொண்ட வர். ஆனால் கவிதைசொல்லி பராபரமே என்கிறார். (*இப்படிச் சொல்வது வழக்கமான பேச்சில் கடவுளைக் குறிக்காமல் ‘நடப்பது நடக்கட்டும்’ என்பதான சில அர்த்தத்தில் பயன்படுத்தப்படுவதும் உண்டு.) இதை MY LORD, OH ALMIGHTY என்று மொழி பெயர்ப்பது கவிஞருக்கு (ஏனெனில் அவரே கவிதை சொல்லியாக வும் என் வாசக மனதுக்குப் புலப்படுவதால்) நியாயம் செய்வதாகாது என்று தோன்றியது. கவிதையில் வரும் பராபரமே என்ற விளியில் ‘உன்னை கருணையே உருவானவர்’ என்று சொல்கிறார்களே’ என்ற விமர்சனம் உட் குறிப்பாக இருப்பது புரிவதால் 'O MERCY -PERSONIFIED' என்று மொழிபெயர்த்திருக்கிறேன் - latha ramakrishnan//

Emboldened by the Me too Movement impacting globally Poet Leena Manimekalai chose to speak out the traumatic experience she had undergone at the hands of a person who tried to take advantage of her many years ago when she had just then started working in the Media. And for this Poet Leena Manimekalai is being harassed by the person concerned who tries to sabotage her future prospects in many ways, citing the defamation case he has filed against her.

I have difference of opinion with Poet Leena Manimekalai on many issues but I have great respect for her as a poet. And, I strongly condemn this continued harassment of a fellow poet for speaking out what was pricking her soul all these years.

The readerly text that a poem presents will not only differ according to the reader but also according to the period in which it is being read, I feel. The ‘Readerly Text or texts’ of a poem could be different in future from what they are in present.

Though we can’t say that the poet and the one speaking in the poem are one and the same we can’t also say that they are two totally different persons.

As being part of the Present I can understand that this poem of hers speak about the way she is being hounded and the way she at times feel terribly low and lost. Leena calls herself an atheist. But, the person in the poem uses the expression ‘Paraa Parame’ an expression extolling the god as ‘The Noblest, The Highest etc( Of course, in Tamil ‘Yaamariyen Paraaparame’ is also used as a general expression of feeling resigned and implying a few other states of mind. So, if I translate it as Oh Lord, Oh, Almighty I won’t be doing justice to the poet( for the person inside the poem and the poet appear to be one and the same to me as being Here and Now. Also, the way she uses the expression ‘Paraa Parame’ appears to me as questioning his repute as ‘the kindest and most benevolent’. Hence, I used the expression O, MERCY-PERSONIFIED’ in English translation.
