HONOURABLE OFFICER

Has retired from service just recently

As he is a staunch believer of God

He can go to the temple daily.

He who has been doing the walking exercises

inside the apartment campus all these days

can henceforth go to the nearby park

sit and chitchat about global issues

with his fellow-pensioners.

It would indeed be satisfying to be

just like all others

watching news and cricket matches

in TV

and enjoying them to the hilt.

Of course, now and then

he can go out

for buying vegetables and for meeting old friends.

Yet

He keeps venting out his grievance

of the fear gripping him

of the prospect of spending the

rest of his life

in searching for another chair

similar to the one

which had held his bums

for more than a quarter century.

மேதகு அதிகாரி

மிகச் சமீபத்தில்தான்

பதவியிலிருந்து ஓய்வு பெற்றிருந்தார்

தீவிர கடவுள் பக்தி உடையரவராகையால்

தினந்தோரும் தவறாமல்

கோவிலுக்குச் செல்லலாம்

அடுக்கக வளாகத்திற்குள்ளேயே

இதுவரை காலையில்

நடைபயிற்சி சென்று கொண்டிருந்தவர்

இனி மாலை நேரங்களில்

அருகிலிருக்கும் சிறு பூங்காவில்

சக ஓய்வூதியக்காரர்களுடன்

உலக விஷயங்களைப் பேசுவதில்

எவ்விதத் தடையும் இருக்காது

மற்றெல்லோரையும் போலவே

தொலைக்காட்சியில் செய்திகளையும்

கிரிக்கெட் போட்டிகளையும் கண்டு களிப்பதில்

திருப்திதான்

அவ்வப்போது காய்கறிகள் வாங்கவும்

பழைய நண்பர்களைப் பார்க்கவும்

வெளியில் போய்வரலாம்தான்

ஆனாலும்

கால்நூற்றாண்டுக்கும் மேலாக

புட்டத்தைத் தாங்கிப் பிடித்திருந்த

அந்த நாற்காலியைப் போல்

வேறொன்றைத் தேடிக் களைப்பதிலேயே

மீதமிருக்கும் வாழ்நாள் கழிந்துவிடுமோ

என்கிற ஐயம்

தன்னை வாட்டிக் கொண்டிருப்பதாக

அங்கலாய்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்...
