 A POEM BY

  ANANDHAN

ALSO HAD A LIFE

O

There was a life for Anandhan also

Who used to be with tyre and stick

coming to the roadside shop

inside the laughing eyes of he

wearing pin-attached half-pants

and with cat-fur back

there was the pride of a car.

He who would buy sugar for five rupees

and silk -egg sambol for half-a-rupee

buying a kadabu sweet for the remaining 10 paise

and concealing it inside jaw

would go flying

Catching dragonflies and make them fly

with thread tied

Catching crow and tying soda-lid

make them fly

What would his days spent thus

do for hunger

they stealthily stoned the green mangoes

His mother plucking grass and

Reaching home late with twenty rupees

Chasing away the sleeping cat

and lighting the stove

would provide him hot lunch.

Neither he who went barefoot

and studied in Maha Vidhyalaya

Nor his family

had any dream about education.

Hunger

Hovering around hunger they crept and

spread

Those children

growing under the hot sun

God kept them away from dire ailments

not being vengeful towards the little ones

For the father who covered with sacks

 his children

lying huddled all too close

in the tiny hutment

throughout the night

blisters and boils of

the next day’s hunger.

Even today Anandhan’s home

remains the same

with no Anandhan.

Deepika

THE CRADLE OF GODDESS

A Family comprising
Mother, Father and Child
was killed by the Goddess
by carrying out an accident.
As the Mother was a good soul
The goddess sent her to the paradise
on the right side
Calling the Father a cruel fellow
She pushed him into hell
on the left side.
Not knowing whether it was good or bad
She kept the child with herself.
The child that began to cry
craving for its parents
continued to weep non-stop.
oud into cloth and lighting a rope
twining them both
the goddess tying a cradle in the space
placed the child in it and started swinging it.
The cradle oscillated between
Heaven and Hell.
The child that started seeing Mother
on the right side
and Father on the left side
stopped crying.
The goddess heaved a sigh of relief.
But the child began to sob again
Poor thing - The Goddess
completely forgetting
whether to turn the child good
or bad
started swinging the cradle
and she is swinging it ever.

ALIENS

The other world convened an emergency meeting

It invited one from my world too

As that one I attended

The other world condemned

this world’s vicious culture of weaponry

Witnessing the fraudulent  trips

of this world that has resources

in abundance

the leaders of the alien world

criticised caustically

The clownish leaders of the world

not having the capacity to protect the globe

contemplating on  shifting man to Mars

should be severely punished

they swore

For catching hold of those leaders

Not having the skill and will to save the world

And to throw them in fire

In the alien world

They sent me again to this world

I was changed into

millions of sun-rays

For crushing the demons of weapons

that dominate the world

proving dreadful

I turned into an armament

Falling as seed

rising and spreading branches

there stood the Tree.

It thought of giving

shade and fruits.

As birds came and sat

It reached the zenith of bliss.

Each  building nest in a branch

They so captured it!

The names of branches changed;

The tree’s name alone

None remembered.

The hand that shared the fruits

Remaining empty

Those who shared the nests

Leapt in joy reveling.

The darkness of roots

None has ever viewed.

The green of the fresh leaves alone

They acclaimed.

None cared about the roots

embracing the soil.

Sitting in branches touching the sky

They would draw borders

Those who reposed in the shade

Forgot to write the history of Sun

Each leaf

Called its green

A separatee category.

But

Juice is one and the same

Those who spoke close to your ears

When the wind blew

When storm arrived

Flew in search of their own sky

The roots that borne that land

They didn’t note even in the map.

In the end

The tree alone

Remained standing there in silence

For

It knows

The land can be captured

Fruits can be plucked

But the memories of roots

entrenched deep down

none can encroach.

மாறின;

CHOZHAN VAALARIVAN

THE LION

Many a month

I had been treading all alone in the jungle

one day I turned and looked

a lion was walking along with me

It didn’t see me

I too didn’t see it.

we both were walking in the same direction.

we crossed the rivers

got drenched in rain

During nights

it lay a little away

at morning when I wake up

it would have got up well before me.

i had fear.

it had nothing of that sort.

did it come to protect me

or did it leave me without devouring

i know not

days turned into months\one day

i reached the edge of the jungle.

there were people

there were houses

There were mirrors

I looked at the lion

It looked at me

In its eyes

There were no demands nor appeals

I didn’t say ‘ Come’

I didn’t say ‘Go’ either

I alone came walking

After a little while I turned and looked.

It was not there

The massive body was not there

Its sere gait was not there

Its silence,  bigger than my fear

was not there

Some species coming into our life is

not for joining us

It is for being with us a short while

showing who we are to ourselves

and leaving.

Now more than jungle it is amidst humans

that I am all the more alone.

 I construct our Love

As a sentence

In that sentence

There may not be any truth at all

But it would calm my heart

Is poetry so loving or sorrowful

I know not

But it gives birth to man

with winged feet.

For rising up from the abyss

into which the heart has plunged

It might help

***

When a flower blooms

It does so

Accepting the consequences therein.

So is Love.

VIDYA MANOHAR

FOUR POEMS BY

VIDYA MANOHAR

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

THE WIND

(1) WIND AND I

I travel along the wavelength of Wind.

As a blank sheet of paper!

Atop mountains

Atop trees

Atop flowers

Flying on and on

Finally I fall on the land

As poem penned by wind

(2) WIND’S BELOVED

They who know not

my love for the wind

They who know not

my lust for the clouds

Think that I stand in silence

All the while I fly

joining hands with the wind

Aided by wings of thoughts.

(3)

Amorphous the wind’s hands are

Its fingers

Red Lily’s long stems

They would rub against the heads of mountains

Haul foam in waves

Would tap the buds

The flowery doors would open

In the wide-opened flower

It would collect pollen

and apply it on the nails

It would get wet in the stream

and the summer would dry it….

Clinging to life

it would lie confined in the body!

As cold Northerly wind

arriving at the door

It would touch the Yellow of

Golden Shower plant

and smear it upon my skin

In dreams I waited

to be wedded to this

Formless one!

‘Bring the password’

I would have you then

as my bride

said the wind

and went past.

***

(4) MELTING IN THE WIND

The wind would

unsettle

extinguish

Say thee

Someday

 it would embrace!

It is to melt

In the wind

So long a wait

“I have received” said one

“The wrapper is damn good” said another.

As if his crown would be in danger if something uttered

the senior remained submerged in silence as ever.

“Write on Love. You would get instant attention

suggested a fellow poet

who has acquired name and fame

As the family man from Kongu land

waiting to see the minister

 _ spreading the towel

having hand as pillow

plunged into sleep at the entrance itself

the thoroughly tired Poem-Colleciton

This is the fifth coffee

since morning

Beginning from the fist window

I have come to the third window

As the sound of bell

lunch in a short while

In between some official meetings

At 3 pm  it is time for the children

to return from school

Coffee again

Charulatha seen long ago is remembered now

This is how , my friends

this miniscule   life

has kept the man

having jungle in his mind

with legs chained

and arms stretched out begging for salary.

ATHMAJIV

 THREE POEMS BY

ATHMAJIV

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

None from above

noticed.

The child drawn

in the semblance of God

growing  into an adult

returns to a cliff.

Alive and kicking

it reaches the hands of

the sculptor

 waiting to carve Satan.

With the removal of

each particle

Satan alive

is all set to come out.

He who comes

and stands next to Satan

on the carved boulder

laughs:

“The same hands that carved me

resembling  God’s

when I was a child

had sculpted the semblance of Satan

Today’

The sculptor’s hands shiver.

‘indeed it is God that

 reality has turned into Satan’

-Observing thus

goes away Satan

pain-borne.

Now the sculptor’s hands

lie resting.

2.HOW MANY CABINS  STILL LEFT?

Facing Time that has wiped off

all his dreams

 He asked just one question.

Losing his essential  self

absolutely

Standing in the middle of a dense jungle

He was retrieving his soul

buried under some unknown tree.

He separated his head from his torso

His hands remained stretched

begging shamelessly

‘They who give are noble ones,

those who give not….’

He swallowed

the words that followed.

The right eye searched for a way

to renew the lost vision of the left eye

At the time of death

Who would get this eye with

ripe cataract.

Chasing words

on behalf of the stomachs

inside which

the demon of poverty

danced deliriously

he begged all for alms

leaving none at all

Taking out poems of yester years

he quenched his hunger

For others too there would remain

dreams of their own to eat

so their hunger satiated.

For going to the other side of the revolving earth

and hide himself

doing away with all walls

he stood there bearing just the burdens

in the running train no place to sit

nor any spot to keep it and rest

the burden that has got into the heart

Alas where to place it at all

Coming out of the room

He never did return

In Memory’s racks

How many remain as yet?

Unfastening the legs

That have grown weary in the

Incessant running with the query pursuing

Awaiting the arrival of hands

that have gone to  beg

Not being able to wipe his tears

He remained standing at the door

Naked to the core.

In the dream of the hungry man

costly dishes being served.

He looks around searching for his

starving family

But there was none

In front of him who likes not to eat all alone

the dishes come hand in hand and console him.

‘In their dreams too we would be served

So, eat to your heart’s content’ – They say.

But, refusing to believe

he wakes up his family members

They all get up startled

‘In your dreams were you served with

delicious costly dishes?’

Asks he hurriedly.

And, they stare at him blankly.
