A POEM BY
HAVI
Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)
So long before us
The river has been here
Just as grains
We too have come with the river
And rooted in the land
As plants
After descending from the mountain
We sowed the grains as seeds
A handful for each family
That was a windy season
On a full moon day
We brought sprouted grain pots
and offering them
thanked the river.
Then step by step
the grains swimming in the river
climbed on the mound of Time
We brought into being crops
The crops started flourishing
and people began to prosper.
On another day
On the bank of river
All gathered
And with Naayanam and Kombu entwining
With Urumi and Melam resonating
We defined the Thinai.
Paying our homage to the river
which was god-incarnate
for the land with crops flourishing
we christened Marutham thus.
Even today our body gives out
the scent of soil
No – the scent of river.

*முளைப்பாரி - "A traditional ritual pot in which nine kinds of grains (Navadhanyam) are sown and grown for festivals."
