“Mother would surely come. Don’t go anyway”

As the school boy

Sitting in the same spot

believing the word

I remain there

Only you who promised you would return

is not seen

அம்மா, நிச்சயமா வந்திடுவன். எங்கயும் போகாத"

வார்த்தைகளை நம்பி 

அதே இடத்தில் அமர்ந்திருக்கும் 

பள்ளிச் சிறுவனாக 

நானின்றும் அங்கேயே 

வந்துவிடுவேன் என்று சொன்ன 

உன்னைத் தான் காணவில்லை

Soon after yesterday’s festival coming to a close

Cleaning the place and arranging things

“Mother can be seen again

only on the day of Navarathri”

muttered to herself

My wife

who keeps searching for Mother

who had passed away

Post our marriage. 

நேற்றைய பண்டிகை முடிந்ததும் 

எடுத்து வைத்துக் கொண்டே

தனக்குத் தானே சொல்லிக் கொண்டாள் 

"அம்மாவ மறுபடியும் நவராத்திரி அன்னிக்கித் தான் பாக்க முடியும்"

கல்யாணம் முடிந்ததும் காலமான அம்மாவை தினந்தோறும் தேடிக்கொண்டே 

இருக்கும் மனைவி

As the kitten playing mischief with its tail

 jumping and leaping

My heart _

that at the turn

from out of blue

saw the tail of  train.

தனது வாலைச் சீண்டியபடி

துள்ளிக் குதிக்கும் பூனைக் குட்டியாக

வளைவில் எதிர்பாரா ஒரு நொடியில் 

தொடர் வண்டியின் வால் பார்த்த மனசு

Would rain all over

and fail without fail

in the place of penance

 _ This rain ruthless

Just as thee.

வழியெங்கும் பெய்யும் 

தவமிருக்கும் இடத்தில் 

தவறாது

பொய்க்கும் 

உன்னைப் போலவே

இரக்கமற்ற இந்த மழை

கண்ணன் விஸ்வகாந்தி
