ONE OF THE LOST EPICS

He was writing something on the city walls

Initially none gave it a second glance

In very fine handwriting line by line

his sentence stretched on and on

With an arrow mark at the spot where the wall ended

He wrote on the next wall.

Day and night

He continued to write.

As he went on writing

a crowd read them and pursued him

They who regarded the house deserving neither a whitewash

nor posters

remained hesitant to demolish it and build new quarters

His Word went along streets and lanes

lengthening infinitely.

Taking copies of it, some went behind.

In the oval-shaped city of Pudhucherry

an Epic written

commencing from the 13th of March 1885

concluding on the 8th of October 1899

disappeared for ever

in the city’s makeover.

Today those who had taken copies of it are no more

Nor are the facsimiles.

In pale and dim letters

a few similes and metaphors there

on walls ruined; forsaken.

நகரத்துச் சுவர்களில் அவன் எதையோ

எழுதிக்கொண்டிருந்தான்

ஆரம்பத்தில் அதை யாரும் பொருட்படுத்தவில்லை

அழகிய கையெழுத்தில் வரிவரியாக வாசகம்

வளர்ந்துகொண்டே போனது

சுவர் முடியும் இடத்தில் அம்புக் குறியிட்டு

அடுத்த சுவரைச் சுட்டினான்

இரவு பகலென அவனது எழுத்துத் தொடர்ந்தது

அவன் எழுதஎழுத ஒரு கூட்டம்

அதை வாசித்தபடியே பின்தொடர்ந்தது

யாவரும் சுவருக்கு வெள்ளையடிக்கவோ

சுவரொட்டி ஒட்டவோ

தேவையற்றதெனக் கருதிய வீட்டை

இடித்துப் புதியது கட்டவோகூடத் தயங்கினர்

தெருத்தெருவாக அவனது வாசகம்

நீண்டுகொண்டே போனது

அதைக் காகிதத்தில் படியெடுத்துக்கொண்டே

சிலர் சென்றனர்

நீள் வட்டவடிவப் புதுச்சேரி நகரத்தில்

1885 மார்ச் 13ஆம் நாள் தொடங்கி

1899 அக்டோபர் 8ஆம் நாள் முடிய

எழுதப்பட்ட ஒரு காப்பியம்

முற்றாக நகரமாற்றத்தில் மறைந்துவிட்டது

இன்று அதைப் பிரதியெடுத்தவர்களும் இல்லை

பிரதியும் இல்லை

மங்கிய எழுத்துகளுள் சில

உவமைகளும் உருவகங்களும்

கைவிடப்பட்ட இடிந்த சுவர்களில்
