SHADOW DELUSIONAL

A man goes escorting a woman

That woman goes escorting a child

That child goes escorting a doll

For me who sees from above

The doll seems to escort all

The doll thus escorting

Was bought in a toyshop.

The entire street is filled with toyshops.

The entire city is a city of selling toys

The entire country is a land selling toys.

That doll was made

melting plastic

and casting it in metal mold

The doll so made was neatly packed

packed so meticulously

so as to make the child believe

that the doll in the pack is beautiful indeed.

But it only made the child believe

that the doll would be lovely

But not that the doll inside the pack

would ever escort it.

வாங்கப்பட்டது;

நம்பவைக்கப்பட்டதே தவிர;

DISTANCE

For remembering some

there will be something

Some things

Events

Songs

In your case

Nothing there except distance.

That you are born

I heard being faraway

From that day onwards

I keep walking

for  our nearness

which is possible of course.

But, the distance refuses

to come to a close.

A torn rupee note

I planned to change hands as one

in tact.

The Tea-selling sister from whom

I usually buy a cup

The granny from whom

I usually buy banana

The big brother from whom

 I usually buy provisions

None of them could be fooled

Like all others

I too gave the rupee note

with the torn part  well concealed

Yet

all of them found out the tear

being momentarily aware.

I, not lost losing hope

decided to act smart

with a grand old man

having skin shrunken

adjusting his spectacles

 _ The one who sells camphor

on Full Moon day

“It is torn, my son

Well, I’ll change it in the Bank

Give me” said he.

And, in his  business acumen

My University Degree

went aflame, with just ashes remained

EACH MOUNTAIN HAS DREAMS

In sleep

I enter into dreams….

The dream hidden in the brain

Comes running

and sits in the inner eye.

The mountains viewing the dream

Off-loaded their angsts and burdens

one by one….

The mountain coming there

Narrated the tale of it cutting of its own ink-applied finger.

Another mountain that stood

Many feet above

came rolling

and stood there lamenting

That the warriors who broke the house it built and

Piled it up neatly

Are being felled mercilessly.

The mountain which many saw

And stood there in wonder and awe

Stood there with billhook machete

for ransacking the whales that had devoured

the  reliefs and aids.

The mountain arrived last

wailed uncontrollably

claiming that Nature

had its kith and kin

buried deep in the sand.

The dream that gathered the pains and agonies of mountains

stood up to insert a new weapon

into my mind.

Now in the dream sprouting in my mind

weapons for liberation are

being manufactured…

If not,

the mountains would dare to

even kill my dream

LEMON YELLOW

All doors of ownership

have become flawed

Love that is Hope breaking apart

 Secret concealed in the dark turning nil

All rooms have turned

Lemon Yellow

For all to see

the dilapidated walls have grown

so weak

Hereafter there is nothing

to admire.

Love’s place

has become the centre

where even things base

can spit with ease

nothing more to speak

all words have attained

the essence of poison.

Well, the remaining words too

are going to settle down

as rock-doves

in the ruined well.

Henceforth for you and I

to mutually serve

There swells nothing but venom

concealed in tongue

In this field where you and I

are going to be

sacrificial prey mutually

Devils have commenced their

deadly game.

In Buddha Robot’s speech

the language of birds sounded

There was the  tale of the Robot

that while leaving the palace

Metal leaving Time

and the era of Mythical seed

sprouting in crow's spit

moving towards Time.

The language of Koel

Rows of ants carrying food

Zen stories

The scent of the herb called heart

All were programmed.

The wax upon which

rain drop stays on the plantain leaf

was applied all over

Feminine language

and the language of Tea

incorporated in it.

He who crossed the road

having a small towel on his head

tore off thoroughly

one of those posters

torn and hanging in the sidewall.

Again looking at the wall

He attempted to laugh heartily

But at once suppressed it

Approaching him I asked

Why he drew back from having

a full-throated laugh.

.

From inside the poster all and sundry

Talk to me without my permission.

None of it is meant for me.

How to stop this atrocity

Asked he.

I go past them without seeing them

my head turned the other side

Said I

Sir,  there is no place for me to look

What for the towel on the head –

For Kaththiri heat

Oh – no,  this is also for avoiding posters

If  you can, please  remove these posters

When there is no one around.

Here – have it ‘

Saying, he gave me a handkerchief to cover the head

Again he crossed the road  and reached across

Could it be that he had no mobile phone …….

My heart is a closed cabin

Now and then sorrow comes and

knock at the window.

Even if I don’t open

blending with the wind

it enters inside!

Shedding tears

is not my weakness

It is rain

stagnated deep down

It is river

swelling; overflowing.

Inside me

memories as old photographs

remain faded

When I feel them

pain shoots at the fingers.

Sorrow is similar to night.

Even in the dark ,

 Stars spark.

Though sorrow unsettles me

to the core

Through consoling, counselling my own self

I  come out of it

stronger than before

 ·

MULLAI AMUTHAN

A POEM BY

MULLAI AMUTHAN

There was the dream.

The sparrow reared

would often come near the window

and remind of Life.

That the house we lived

Changing hands many

Is coming for sale

My elder sister said.

It can be given to our daughter

Wife insisted.

Indeed true.

The house Father purchased for Mother

For me too when married

it was there my first night was

Children growing

Going to sister as ‘Seedhanam’

Thus changing hands

Again and again….

In his last days

Lifting father in my hands

Carrying Mother to

crematorium

Everything remains in my memory

Crystal clear and secure

 I shouldn’t step inside the house

Law said.

Case filed against me

By my sister is still pending

Dreams aplenty

About the house lived long

Tomorrow from here

 My son would carry me also

Till that time

Let me live with dreams about that abode

I told the sparrow.

I DON’T SIT FOR WRITING POEM

With its words

ever changing

in shape and structure

It searches for me day in and day out.

Getting into the dreams of he who remains

In blissful communion with prose, essays

It invites.

After I wake up with my sleep gone

I will surely write about thee, said I.

More than writing

You better get a divine vision of me

in the morning prayer with eyes closed,

it said.

After work

with the spine aching abominably

I dozed off in Metro.

When I woke up

right in front of me stood teary-eyed

She who had gone away

as dream unrealized.

While taking leave

It was not her tears that

fell scattering

It was Poem stamped upon

 by fellow-passengers.

VALANGAIMAN NOORDEEN

 A POEM BY

VALANGAIMAN NOORDEEN

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

I DISAPPEAR IN THE PAINTING

Outside my window a bird

Is flying towards the dark

Does it want to obtain darkness

Or is it escaping from light…?

The ash-hued sky with its clouds

Is fanning the face of this day’s end

Faraway trees turning into black letters

And stand there as poem beyond reading

The branches that bore the birds’ voices during day

Now hold the burden of nothingness

The evening stuck in the window-bars

Peel its skin gradually and become Night

The wind entering my room

Turning into dark’s  perfume

spreads its fragrance.

Darkness settled in the bird’s feathers

Alight inside me also little by little

I sit closing the window

Bird, sky, clouds, darkness,

All draw my aloneness.

In that sketch just as this dusk

I am extinguishing.

N

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
என் ஜன்னலுக்கு வெளியே ஒரு பறவை
இருளை நோக்கிப் பறந்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது.
அது இரவை அடைய விரும்புகிறதா,
அல்லது வெளிச்சத்திலிருந்து தப்பிக்கிறதா…?
சாம்பல் நிற வானம் தன் மேகங்களால்
இந்த நாளின் இறுதியின் முகத்தில் சாமரம் வீசுகிறது.
தொலைதூர மரங்கள் கருநிற எழுத்துக்களாகி
வாசிக்க முடியாத கவிதையாக நிற்கின்றன.
பகலில் பறவைகளின் குரல்களைத் தாங்கிய கிளைகள்
இப்போது வெறுமையின் எடையைத் தாங்குகின்றன.
ஜன்னல் கம்பிகளில் சிக்கியிருக்கும் மாலை
மெல்ல மெல்ல தன் உடலை உரித்து இரவாகிறது.
என் அறைக்குள் நுழையும் காற்று
கருமையின் வாசனையாகி கமழ்கிறது.
பறவையின் சிறகுகளில் படிந்த இருள்
எனக்குள்ளும் சிறிது சிறிதாக இறங்குகிறது.
ஜன்னலை மூடி அமர்கிறேன்.
பறவை, வானம், மேகங்கள், இருள்
அனைத்தும் என் தனிமையை வரைகின்றன.
அந்த ஓவியத்தில் இந்த மாலையைப்போலவே
அணைந்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன் நான்.
