THE NOBLEHEARTED

For Ponnamma

of the veggie shop

who keeps the coins received

underneath the sack

Trust in fellowmen must be

stronger than locked iron gates

Right In the middle of the road

A crow lying dead

Halting the vehicle

with whatever I could get

I pushed it to the roadside.

‘Once dead how could be resurrected

Let’s at least save it from being crushed

right in front of our eyes’

Feeling thus despaired

when moving ahead

seeing a squirrel running helter-skelter

applying the break

the heart felt gratified

being eased of

some sense of guilt.

Going into the cafeteria

where two hundred and odd can be seated

I ordered a fruit juice and was gulping it all alone

At that juncture another woman

Just like me had come in

and asking for a cup of tea

began drinking it.

In that serene atmosphere

She and I

having none beside to chat and share

Eyeing each other empathetically

were smiling and suspending the aloneness.

"பெரு மனிதர்கள்"

காய்கறிக் கடையில்

வாங்கும் சில்லறைகளை

சாக்கு பைக்கு அடியில்

போட்டு வைக்கும்

பொன்னம்மாவிற்கு

மனிதர்கள் மீதான

நம்பிக்கை என்பது

பூட்டிய இரும்புக்கதவுகளை விட வலிமையானதாகவே இருக்கக்கூடும்..

சாலை நடுவே காகம் ஒன்று

இறந்துக் கிடக்க வாகனம் நிறுத்தி

கையில் கிடைத்தப் பொருளால்

காகத்தை ஓரம் தள்ளினேன்

மரித்தபின் காப்பற்ற என்ன இருக்கிறது

கண்முன்னே நசுங்காமலாவது பார்த்துக்கலாம் என்ற விரக்தியில் சற்றே

முன்னே நகர குறுக்குமறுக்கில்

அணில் ஒன்று கடப்பதைப் பார்த்து

சட்டென வாகனம் நிறுத்தியதில்

ஏதோ ஒரு குற்றவுணர்வை

மனம் சமன் செய்துப் போனது....

இருநூறு பேர் அமரக்கூடிய அளவிலான அந்த உணவகத்தில் தனியாக சென்று

ஒரே ஒரு பழரசத்தை கேட்டு வாங்கி குடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தேன்

அந்நேரத்தில் என்னைப்போலவே இன்னொரு பெண்ணும்

தனியாகவே உள்வந்து

ஒரு தேநீரை கேட்டு வாங்கிப் பருக ஆரம்பித்திருந்தாள்

அமைதியான அச்சூழலில் பேச யாருமற்ற

நாங்கள் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் பரஸ்பரம்

ஒரே பரிதாபக் கண்ணோட்டத்தோடு பார்த்துக்கொண்டு

புன்னகைத்து தனிமையை கரைத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தோம்..
