Whenever I take the old Seiko clock

that starting from ten

ticking late by twenty minutes

to Salim Bai

'You won’t get one like this

even if you wish' says he.

Father also said the same

when I was seven year old

'Now it would run -

for, the repair is done'

says Salim Bai

Blissfully happy to hear it

'Exact time now

would be royally installed on my table'

I thought thus, but alas

the very next morn

twenty minutes were lost.

Holding it close to the ear when I listened

the clock’s rhythm was in tact

Once again I took it to Salim Bai’s shop

Opening the clock

and fixing a small magnifying glass

in one eye

He observed keenly

and said _'

No big deal, sir.

Suffice to repair it a bit

Come in the evening

'Will it be worthwhile to spend on it' I asked

'You wouldn’t have keyed it properly' said he

I have opened the Seiko

in slightly faded golden hue

kept in a compact leather box

and seen

it is in good condition

since morning correct time is being shown

here, have it', said he.

Giving him the fee for repairing

When I returned home

my better half smiling in a new fashion

avoiding the clock

eyed me.

With the time of keying the previous day

in tact

I have keyed it fully.

Thought of keeping it in the box

for two days.

Now it is running ten minutes late.

Salim Bai would open his shop at nine-thirty.

Nothing would happen

if I keep it closed till that time.

For me Seiko watch is prime

more than the time

On telling Salim Bai

that the clock was running

ten minutes behind time

'It was running perfectly well here

a little repair would do

let it be here for two days

you can’t get this model even in Moor Market

it would be, sir, a little ahead or behind,

Insha Allah henceforth it would be fine

ஒவ்வொருமுறையும் பத்தில் துவங்கி

இருபது நிமிடங்கள் தாமதாமாக ஒடும்

பழைய சீக்கோ அலாரம் கடிகாரத்தை

சலீம் பாயிடம் எடுத்துச் செல்லும் போதெல்லாம்

இப்போது விரும்பினாலும் கிடைக்காது என்கிறார்

அப்பாவும் என் ஏழாவது வயதில் அப்படித்தான சொன்னார்

இப்பொது சரியாக ஓடுமென்று

பழுதுநீக்கியதாக சொல்கிறார் சலீம்பாய்

எத்தனை ஆனந்தம் இப்போது சரியான நேரம்

என் மேசையில் வீற்றிருக்கும் என்று நினைக்கையில்

அடுத்த நாள் காலையில் இருபது நிமிடங்கள் தொலைந்துவிட்டிருந்தன

காதருகில் வைத்து கேட்கும்போது

கடிகாரத்தின் ஓட்டலயம் தப்பவில்லை

மீண்டும் எடுத்துச் சென்றேன்

கடிகாரத்தை திறந்து ஒருகண்ணில்

சின்ன பூதக்கண்ணாடியைப் பொருத்திக் கொண்டு

கூர்ந்து பார்த்துவிட்டு

ஒன்றுமில்லை சார்

சின்னதாக சரிபார்த்தால் போதும்

மாலை வாருங்கள் என்ற சலீம்பாயிடம்

இதற்கு செலவிடுவது பிரயோஜனமாக இருக்குமா என்றேன்

சாவிசரியா கொடுத்திருக்க மாட்டீர்கள் என்றார்

தங்கமுலாம் லேசாக மங்கி

சிறுசதுர தோல்பெட்டிக்குள்

கையடக்கமாக இருக்கும் சீக்கோவைத்

திறந்து பார்த்துவிட்டேன் நன்றாகத்தான் உள்ளது

காலைமுதல் இங்கு நேரம் மாறவில்லை

இந்தாருங்கள் என்றார்

அவருக்கான பழுதுநீக்கும் கட்டணத்தைத் தந்துவிட்டு

இல்லம் திரும்பியதும்

துணைவி புதுவிதமாக சிரித்தபடியே

கடிகாரத்தைத் தவிர்த்துவிட்டு என்னைப் பார்கிறார்

நேற்று சாவிகொடுத்த அதே நேரம் தவறாது

முழுசாவியும் கொடுத்தாயிற்று

இரண்டு நாட்கள் பெட்டிக்குள் மூடிவைத்துவிட

எண்ணினேன்

இப்போது பத்துநிமிடம் தாமதமாகிவிட்டிருந்தது

சலீம்பாய் ஒன்பதரை மணிக்குதான் கடைதிறப்பார்

அதுவரை மூடிவைத்து ஒன்றும் ஆகப்போவதில்லை

எனக்கு நேரத்தைவிட

சீகோ கடிகாரம் முக்கியம்

சலீம்பாயிடம் பத்து நிமிடம் தாமதமாக

நேரத்தை காண்பிக்கிறதே என்றதும்

இங்கு நன்றாகத்தான் ஒடியது

சின்னதாக சரிபார்த்தால் சரியாகிவிடும்

இரண்டு நாட்கள் இருக்கட்டும்

இந்த மாடல் சீக்கோ மூர்மார்க்கட்டில்கூட

கிடைக்காது

கொஞ்சம் அப்படியும் இப்படியுமாகத்தான்

இருக்கும் சார்

இன்ஷா அல்லாஹ் இனி சரியா ஓடும்

வாங்க என்றார்.
