VASANTHADHEEPAN

 FOUR POEMS BY

VASANTHADHEEPAN

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

HE WHO FEELS SAD FOR HIS SUFFERING BRETHREN

He is not one enchanted by the hues and shades of

Butterflies

He never wanders in search of the radiance of stars

He doesn’t shed tears for leaves falling

He never sits in penance for the flowers to bloom

He is not one inhaling the scent of gunpowder

He is not one who enjoys the child’s teary cry

as music supreme.

He is not one who devours women’s flesh

as the rogue cat.

He is not one who fills gloom in books

He is one who thinks not of  making anyone

wear yokes as ornaments.

He feeds not  anyone with the venom of caste.

He carries not the burden of religious fanaticism

in heart and brain.

He loves his Mother Tongue

but never shuns other languages

He never makes other race  the manure

for nurturing his own, sure.

He doesn’t mix the imagination of god

in society’s blood.

In water land and wind

which are the very life of Nature

He would never fill the greed of selfishness.

For making man to live a man

joining hands with the collective society

sowing humaneness as the very essence

of the future generations

For making life an enchanting flower garden

He wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice himself. Amen.

2. ALONENESS AND ITS  TRAVEL NOTES

(1)

In order to lose the shadow

I went to the desert

On the sandy space there seated

The images of plants thousand.

With a look of accusation

They glared at me.

I set out to dig the fountain

For turning them peaceful.

My shadow was destroyed

devouring the body.

2)

Hundred faces for god

Thousand for man

Life that wanders formless

indefinite

Just as

by burying its head in the sand

the ostrich  can save its skin

and so climbing the bubble

going on a long voyage

so a lifetime for all

with greed myriad

unquenched.

(3)

No language exists

To spell out that which nags the heart

Which words to perform

the bonding-breaking ritual?

How to express?

In the minutes dropping

one by one

bearing untold burden

And push forward the days

In such a voyage sans notes

When… What

Can be determined?

The Beginning and End

Darkness or Radiance?

In this

Rolling in dreams

Going beyond Time and Space

With the sky flowering

The earth too feeling ecstatic

As a tiny particle in the universe

the world remains.

SHAHIBKIRAN THAKKAI

TWO POEMS BY

SHAHIBKIRAN THAKKAI

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

(1)

With hues parted from the painting

released from art absolutely

and almost touching its nascent stage

- The Half Circle

That the residual whole

As abstract painting

Waiting for its shade

Who can know of it?

Sun’s eyes sans lids

Would open.

(2) THE JUNGLE

This landmark

of the  town itself

as a Cross

Killing pain

not just today but always -

a Word that cannot be waded through.

That Word defies meaning

in any and all language.

It is not in inserting the thread

into the needle

It is in reaping the benefits.

Henceforth all that unites

are the ones separated.

That

moving as a seed

balances this universe

The state of equilibrium

floats

as Dusk

the scent of a forest

a Beetle that never goes astray

Can we balance

the ‘lone-word’ language

that covers the nights

with universe being the lid

But something sans identity

keeps coming in my dreams

At the very instant

when I bring down  from the Cross

the  Word

weighing heavy with the

pain of language

It becomes a Big Bang.

°°°°°°°°°°

DR. A. AMULRAJ

TWO POEMS BY

Dr.A.AMULRAJ

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

1.MOTHER’S WISH GONE WITH THE WIND

Mother had grown Kanakaambaram plants

at the doorway.

In orange hue

flowers swelling all over the plants

Would crawl as child

 throughout the night

In rain and wind

would dance blissfully

Visitors to our house

eyed them eagerly and enquired

Heaping sand outside

for erecting compound wall

these plants had to be plucked

and cast aside.

Left for job

I returned home

when it was getting dark.

The plants that have lost

even the handful of sand

where they dwelt

were lying in a corner near the wall

as corpses squeezed into

 one heap.

There is no chance of those withered plants

spreading roots and sprouting.

Even so

I can’t throw them away,

you know

2.THE PRIDE AND GLORY OF FATHER

For all three children

Father had constructed houses

each, one.

Door-frame, windows door

in Vengai, and Teak wood

Snakes proving a menace

I sent word for mason

for erecting a compound wall

and consulted him.

13 pillar

Pit, 2 by 4

35 gunny bags of cement

10 M Bars

8 M Bars

M-Sand, Crushed stones

-Thus he gave me a list.

They dug the pit

For each pit

Wage Rs.600

Mason’s wage 850

Construction labourer 550

At last

In 1 lakh 10 thousand

The compound wall stood there

at the ground-level.

The entrance has to be elevated to

the road height

Bring sand 35 load

Only then the work can be done

Said the mason.

Somehow searched and found it

and heaping sand in the tractor

I levelled it.

For erecting the compound wall

No money left.

The money got

mortgaging wife’s pair of ear-rings

helped only to complete half of the work

For the 48000 got from Mahes

monthly interest 800 rupees.

‘You didn’t listen to me at all’

 Says My better-half.

And, you know -

My father was uneducated.

S.FAIZA ALI

 A POEM BY

S.FAIZA ALI

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

PROTECTOR TURNED PREDATOR

I listened  taking time

With instincts intensely insisting

that I shouldn’t tire her out -

Only when needed

I enquired.

She had shed her pains

In little drops.

Only for making her feel assured

that her secret would be safeguarded

Words proved ineffective.

I become the mother hen

that embraces with its warm feathers

the chicken shivering in chill.

The  screeching voice that

scorched the cabin-walls

slowly subsides and turns silent.

O what a silence

wholesome silence

in those glistening  tender eyes

That which was described

with words

with gestures and movements….

and

In sobs…

That which I could realize

would suffice

for  filling the gaps

My pen

 refuses to fit them

into any ranking scales

The revolting vulgarities  of

the protector turning predator

the resulting repugnance

I can never pen them

conjointly

with the scent of  wet jasmine.

CONJEEVARAM SADASIVAM RAVINDRAMANI

 TWO POEMS BY

CONJEEVARAM SADASIVAM RAVINDRAMANI

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

1. HOLD ON……

(or)

THE GRIP

You are a Theist

I am a confirmed Atheist.

Physically this one and that one are

Not in anyway different

Both drink water to quench their thirst

In the heat.

In chill days

Both cover them with blankets and sleep.

One covering himself with the blanket

 and lies down

Another lies down and then covers himself

With the blanket

Only their  mugs  differ

only blankets differ

Only Their outlooks  differ

Only their beliefs differ

Only their prayers differ

Both of them are holding  some

perilously slimy  python

and hanging suspended

Once this hold is gone

their holding on

would no more be

thereon

All things the same

All the same

the same being not the same!

Vapour turns into cloud

Dark clouds all set to pour down torrentially

Rained and  the flooding river

Snow that flowed and finally

turned frozen

All are water

And, one and the same – all these are.

As Gas

Pouring liquid

Freezing snow

All are one and the same

Yet  in different shapes

Their forms being not the same

All things the same

All the same

the same being not the same!

SRINIVASAN ARUNACHALAM

 POEMS BY

SRINIVASAN ARUNACHALAM

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

1.

Even goddesses

born as the incarnation

of fierce rage and aggression

eventually have to appear

 peace-personified  - Oh Dear!

2.

Spreading his own self

slept off

the mat vendor

thoroughly fatigued.

3.

Hey you, asking me

‘Why go on writing

on  Love

even now

Is it fair?

Don’t you breathe the

same air?

4.

Sometimes

Forgetting the Truth

They utter lies.

Sometimes

Forgetting oneself

They speak the truth.

Otherwise –

All are

Of course Harichandras!

5.

Don’t be a model

For one and all

Don’t be an example

For one and all

Don’t be an open book

Giving away lavishly

 your experiences

in a sweep

The Demo car

always gets sold

as an automobile second hand.

6.

These days

I don’t worry afresh

For

Have grown old

The old worries too..

7.

I, The Doctor

Hereby declare

 _ The patience saved

needs treatment ever

But, the patient dead and gone

requires treatment

only till death. Amen.

8.

In poems starting with I and Mine

Don’t search for Me_

You won’t get me.

You might be found.

Your Cross

I bear in my name.

Bear yours

In my name.

9.

The terraces wear attires

on special occasions.

Covered by whatever fabrics

As clothing  Adam and Eve

They invariably look absurd

and obscene

10.

Terrace

Lap sans legs

JEYANTHAN JESUDOSS (NOVA NADHI)

A POEM BY

JEYANTHAN JESUDOSS

(NOVA NADHI)

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

PROSPERITY  PRIME ; PRISTINE

From fights which I could have easily won

I exited as the one defeated

Just my peace accompanied me.

I had answers

Yet some queries I sent away

empty handed.

Seeing stain glittering in the name seen on screen

I placed my mobile upside down

The room became mine once again.

Someone was continuously tapping outside

That not opening is also a solid response

I had learnt.

Those who wrongly understood as wrong

I was not proving it right

Let their wrong ‘Me’

remain with them; let it be

For correcting the waves

I was standing on the shores

Only later on I understood

That giving advice to the waves

Is not the job of feather.

The stones thrown at me

I never threw back

Some of them I had left there itself

As Memorial Stones

and moved on.

Just because I talk gently

It doesn’t mean that

my sword has grown blunt.

For those who think that I have

nothing

know  not

That I have prosperity prime; pristine

shown to none

which I have kept  under lock within .
