What made your love with the bird end

For Vikramadityan’s query

the autumnal tree

with its roots turning thin and shrunken

began responding

‘When the bird wished

how I am to be’,

more than just being near me.’

‘What did the bird want you to be’

Annoyance _

Sarcasm _

In a tone defying

comprehension

said the Tree

‘That I am to fly, you see’.

‘Then, will the sky provide

nest for the bird and its chicks?’

_Never tiring in his efforts

Vikramadityan came out with the next.

‘Why do I get all advocates

after the case is adjudicated?

And, why is it that

not asking the plaintiff anything

they court-martial the defendant?’

the Tree shot back

‘For inquiry

the Bird is nowhere here’

_ Pat came the answer.

‘We can ask only those

to whom we have access’

Answering thus

the Tree closed its eyes

as if closing the discourse

Vikramadhityan looked up

In the sky

There were Birds

The Sky too

just as the tree

stood there – ‘simply be’

பறவையுடனான

உன் காதல்

எப்படி முறிந்தது?

விக்ரமாதித்தன் கேள்விக்கு

விடை சொல்லத் தொடங்கியது

வேர்கள்

மெலிந்து சுருங்கிவரும்

இலையுதிர்த்த மரம்

என்னுடன் இருப்பதைவிட

நான்

எப்படி இருக்க வேண்டுமென்று

பறவை

ஆசைப்பட்ட போது

நீ

எப்படி இருக்க வேண்டுமென்று

பறவை ஆசைப்பட்டது

கடுப்பா

சர்காஸமா

கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியாத

குரலில் சொன்னது மரம்

பறக்க வேண்டுமாம்

அப்புறம்

பறவைக்கும்

அதன் குஞ்சுகளுக்கும்

கூடு

வானமா தரும்

முயற்சியில் தளராத

விக்ரமாதித்தன் கேட்டான்

அடுத்த கேள்வியை

எல்லா வக்கீல்களும்

ஏன்

எனக்கு

வழக்கு முடிந்ததற்கு

அப்புறம்

கிடைக்கிறார்கள்

அவர்களும்

பிரதிவாதியைக் கேட்காமல்

வாதியைக்

குறுக்கு விசாரணை செய்கிறார்கள்

திருப்பிக் கேட்டது மரம்

கேட்பதற்குப்

பறவை இல்லையே

பதில் வந்தது

இருப்பவர்களைத் தான்

கேட்க முடியும்

பதில் சொன்ன மரம்

கண்களை மூடிக் கொண்டது

முடித்துக் கொண்டது போல

மேலே பார்த்தான்

விக்ரமாதித்தன்

ஆகாயத்தில்

பறவைகள்

ஆகாயமும்

மரத்தைப்போலவே

சும்மாதான்

நின்று கொண்டிருந்தது
