THE TALE OF A CASTE

If there is one work set aside

generation after generation

to one particular caste

That is scavenging job

Reservation policy can never be

implemented here

Turning us permanent employees

and offering us salary hike

would improve our families’ financial condition.

would uplift the next generation’s

means of livelihood.

Only as long as this poverty prevails

our children would continue to come

with broomstick and Phenyl

You are free to frown

Cover your nose

Feeling all too repulsive

You might move away

for us to get inside the septic tank

all too readily

to remove its filth

paying us paltry wage

and keeping us poor

is good for thee

For, in the next generation

If all become officers

who of which caste can be

assigned the job?

Therefore

paying us paltry wage

and keeping us filthy

would indeed be the wise thing to do

Changing our name from Thuppuravu Paniyaalar

to Thooimai Paniyaalar

_ you claim it to be a great transformation.

Do you have any real modern option

for getting inside the septic tank? Ho, come on....

How so easily you threw us away

If we don’t come for even a few days

You won’t remove your own garbage

Till the time worms writhe in it – Right?

Did we make any undue demands?

Why broke the supporting hands

With fists raised

Asking for our rights?

That which you broke

are but the bones of countless hands

of our succeeding generations

that strive to reach

real great heights

Indeed, we are somewhat afraid

Hence

Let us teach our children

How to clean the toilets

spotless; shining

Let you as usual

turn your raw social justice

all the more glowing

and showcase them all over the place

தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாய்

ஒரே சாதிக்கு மட்டும்

ஒதுக்கப்பட்ட பணியென்று ஒன்று

உண்டென்றால்

அது தூய்மைப் பணிதான்

இட ஓதுக்கீட்டு கொள்கையை

இங்கு மட்டும்

ஒருபோதும் அமல்படுத்தவே முடியாது

பணி நிரந்தரமும்

ஊதிய உயர்வும்

எங்கள் குடும்பங்களின் பொருளாதாரத்தை நிறைவு செய்யும்

எங்கள் பிள்ளைகளின்

உயர்கல்வியை உறுதி செய்யும்

அடுத்த தலைமுறையின்

வாழ்வாதாரத்தை உயர்த்தும்

இந்த வறுமை இருக்கும் வரைதான்

எங்கள் பிள்ளைகள்

பெருக்குமாறோடும்

பினாயிலோடும்

வந்து கொண்டே இருப்பார்கள்

நீங்கள் முகம் சுளிக்கலாம்

மூக்கை பொத்தலாம்

அருவருப்பு தாங்காமல்

அந்த இடத்தைவிட்டு நகர்ந்து போகலாம்

நாங்கள் தயங்காமல்

பாதாள சாக்கடையில் இறங்கி

அடைப்பு எடுப்பதற்கு

எங்களுக்கு சொற்ப கூலி கொடுத்து

வறுமையாகவே வைத்திருப்பதுதான்

நல்லது

அடுத்த தலைமுறையில்

எல்லோரும் அதிகாரி ஆகிவிட்டால்

குப்பை அள்ள

எந்த சாதிக்காரனை நியமிக்க முடியும்

ஆதாலால்

எங்களுக்கு சொற்ப கூலி கொடுத்து

அழுக்காகவே வைத்திருப்பதுதான்

ரொம்ப நல்லது

'துப்புரவுப் பணியாளர்' என்பதை

'தூய்மைப் பணியாளர்' என்று

பெயர் மாற்றியதைதான்

பெரிய மாற்றம் என்கீறிர்கள்

மலக்குழிக்குள் இறங்க

உங்களிடம் ஏதேனும் நவீன மாற்றம்

உண்டா?

எங்களை எவ்வளவு எளிதாக

அப்புறப்படுத்தீனீர்கள்

நாலைந்து நாட்கள்

நாங்கள் வராமல் போனால்

புழு நெளியும் வரை

உங்கள் வீட்டு குப்பைகளைக்கூட

அப்புறப்படுத்த மாட்டீர்கள்தானே

அப்படி என்ன கேட்டுவிட்டோம் என்று

எங்களுக்காக உயர்த்தப்பட்ட கைகளின்

எலும்புகளை உடைத்தீர்கள்?

நீங்கள் உடைத்தது

உயரத்தை எட்டிப்பிடிப்பதற்காக உந்தும்

எங்கள் அடுத்த தலைமுறைகளின்

எண்ணற்ற

கைகளின் எலும்புகளைதான் என்று

எங்களுக்கு நன்றாகத் தெரியும்

கொஞ்சம் பயமாக இருக்கிறது

ஆதலால்

எங்கள் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு

கழிப்பறையைப் பளபளப்பாக்கும்

உத்தியை என்னவென்று

கற்றுக் கொடுத்துவிடுகிறோம்

நீங்கள் எப்போதும் போல்

உங்கள் முரட்டு சமூக நீதியை

இன்னும் பளபளப்பாக்கி

ஊருக்குள் காட்சிப்படுத்துங்கள்
