1. LIE IS ABSOLUTE TRUTH

Whatever be the form

A dance does perform

dances many in us.

Swaying and shaking our hands and legs

instinctively

We take it to be dance.

After confronted by adverse criticism

our rehearsals stand postponed.

We develop a hatred towards Dance

Sculptures sketches stories

So we study and research Dance

and evaluate its lapses with such exactness.

The stir stagnating between Music and Aaalaapanaa

becomes our focal point

After a brief training

we perform our Arangetram

Amidst the claps heard

before the curtain comes down

a silence

unsettles us.

Consoling us that the silence is not real

the Vidwan’s fingers

call us for the next scene.

பொய்யென்பது துல்லியமான உண்மை

எவ்வகையினதாயினும்

நடனம், நமக்குள்

பல்வேறு நடனங்களை நிகழ்த்துகிறது.

கை கால்களை நம்மையறியாமல்

ஆட்டிப் பழக்கி, நடனமென நம்புகிறோம்.

கேலிக்கு ஆளான பின்

நம் ஒத்திகை ஒத்திவைக்கப்படுகிறது.

நடனத்தின் மீதே வெறுப்பு கொள்கிறோம்.

சிலைகள் ஓவியங்கள் கதைகளென

நடன ஆய்வுகள் மேற்கொண்டு

பிசகுகளைத் துல்லியமாகக் கணிக்கிறோம்.

இசைக்கும் ஆலாபனைக்குமிடையில்

தேக்கமுறும் அசைவின் மீதே

நம் முழுக்கவனமும்.

சிறு பயிற்சிக்குப் பின்

அரங்கேற்றத்தை நிகழ்த்துகிறோம்.

திரைச்சீலை விழும் முன் எழும்

கைதட்டல்களுக்கிடையே

ஒரு மௌனம்

நம்மைத் தொந்தரவு செய்கிறது.

அந்த மௌனம் பொய்யானதென

சமாதானம் செய்தபடி

அடுத்த காட்சிக்கு நம்மை அழைக்கிறது

வித்வானின் விரல்கள்.

Have you noticed the strings of Veena

Those fingers that tune them

Their postures

The cross-legged sitting

The smile radiant in the eyes

The minuscule attention paid

to the accompaniments

The silence strolling between two strokes

The ease with which some phonetic slip

is crossed over

the move ahead for the next ‘alaapanaa’

When in the orchestra

the strain of Veena

sounds as the moan born

of a child stubborn

chided and restrained

Oh what angst and rue

Gayathri and Chitibabu must’ve gone through…

வீணையின் நரம்புகளைக்

கவனித்திருக்கிறீர்களா

அதை மீட்டும் விரல்களை

அதற்கான பாவனைகளை

சம்மணத்தை

கண்களில் மிளிரும் புன்னகையை

உள்ளூர ஒத்திசையும் இசைக்குறிப்பை

பக்கவாத்தியங்களின் மீதான

துளிக் கவனத்தை

இரு மீட்டல்களுக்கிடையே

உலவும் மௌனத்தை

அட்சரப் பிசகைக் கடக்கும் லாவகத்தை

அடுத்த ஆலாபனைக்கான முன்னகர்வை

அடம்பிடித்து அடக்கி வைக்கப்பட்ட

குழந்தையிடம் எழும் முனகலைப் போல

இசைக்குழுவில் வீணையின் சரடு

ஒலிக்கும் போது

எவ்வளவு துடித்துப் போயிருப்பார்கள்

காயத்ரியும் சிட்டிபாபுவும்?
