MELATTUR BRIDGE

Once upon a time there was no bridge above the river

A giant float was living between the two banks
Now, it is not so.
the bridge between Agaramangudi and Melattur
stands on the river ‘Vettaaru’
It has gained a new fissure now
How unfortunate I am
standing on this and viewing the river
without having my legs soaked in it
With the passage of time
the bridge would collapse.
An old man would ferry
A boat between the two banks
Seated in one corner of the canoe
I would moist the merciful river with my hands
As usual
whenever I wade through the bridge
hands turn towards the river
impulsively.

மெலட்டூர் ஆற்றுப் பாலம்

முன்னொரு காலத்தில் ஆற்றின்மேல் பாலம் இல்லை
பெரும்பரிசல் ஒன்று
இரு கரைகளுக்கும் இடையே வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருந்தது.
இப்போது அப்படியில்லை. அகரமாங்குடிக்கும்
மெலட்டூர்க்குமான பாலம் வெட்டாறு மேல் நிற்கிறது.
இப்போது புதிய விரிசலை அது கண்டுவிட்டது.
நான் இதன்மேல் நின்றுகொண்டு
இந்த ஆற்றில் கால் நனைக்காமல் தரிசிக்கிறேன்
என்பது எவ்வளவு துர்பாக்கியம்.
இன்னுஞ்சில காலத்தில் பாலம் இடிந்துவிழும்.
அக்கரைக்கும் இக்கரைக்குமான பரிசல் ஒன்றைக்
கிழவன் ஒருவன் செலுத்துவான்.
அந்தப் பரிசலின் ஓரத்தில் அமர்ந்தபடி
ஈரமிக்க ஆற்றினைக் கைகளால் நனைப்பேன்.
எப்போதும் போல்
பாலத்தைக்
கடக்கும்போதெல்லாம்
ஆற்றை நோக்கிக் கைகள் தாமாக
திரும்புகின்றன.
