A POEM BY

since I had eulogized the Rain
as Mother Supreme with clouds descending
on the earth
and breastfeeding the crops
Not far away have I hailed the rainclouds
as Father toiling with sweat pouring out
facilitating the soil all over
to gain moisture
For the prime guest who came and delivered
the speech
coming in time for
felicitating the slushy agricultural field
and turning her pleasantly cool.
vote of thanks in the wind around.
Can’t the fields with abundant yield
laugh happily
O Mother, why do you glare at them?
Why not Nellaaru flow on merrily
zigzagging on the road
O Lord why do you throw stone?
O prime guest-of-honour
Why come late and disrupt the Field Festivity
When the reddened cloud which should come laughing
arrive densely dark
the canopies that shroud the river – poor they
would be hit by stones at this hour
Looking above repeatedly
the peasant’s neck is broken
Now that which are hit the worst
are but the droplets of his sweat.

மழை எதிர்த்த படலம்.
..............................................
மேகங்கள் தரையிறங்கி
வாய்க்காலில் நடந்து வந்து
பயிர்களுக்குப் பாலூட்டும்
தாயென்று புகழ்பாடி
மாதம் மூன்று ஆகவில்லை.
நிலம் முழுதும்
ஈரம் விளைய
வியர்வை பொழியும் தந்தையென
மழைமுகில்களைத் துதிபாடிய நாட்கள்
இன்னும் தூரம்போகவில்லை.
சேற்றுவயலை
பாராட்டிக் குளிரச்செய்ய
உரிய நேரத்துக்கு வந்து
சொற்பொழிவாற்றிய பிரதம அதிதிக்கு
வயல் காற்றில் நன்றியுரை.
விளைச்சல் பெருகிய வயல்கள்
சிரிக்கக் கூடாதா?
தாயே ஏன் இருண்டு முறைக்கிறாய்?
நெல்லாறு கலகலத்து
வீதியில் முழுதும் ஓடக்கூடாதா?
பிதாவே ஏன் கல்லெறிகின்றாய்?
பிரதம அதிதியே
பிந்தி வந்து ஏன்
வயல் விழாவைக் கெடுக்கிறாய்?
சிரித்து வரவேண்டிய
சிவந்த முகில்
கறுத்து வரும்போது..
ஆற்றை மூடும்
படங்குகள் பாவம்
இந்நேரமெல்லாம் கல்லெறி வாங்கும்
அண்ணாந்து பார்த்துப்பார்த்தே
கழுத்து முறிந்தான் உழவன்
இப்போது அடிபட்டு ஓடுவது
அவன் சிந்திய வியர்வை மணிகள்.
