PK SIVAKUMAR

 A POEM BY

PK SIVAKUMAR

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

Time the same
People the same
But the Train is not the same
Mmm...
What did I say
The same people
But
Not exactly the same
So what
The train runs
And they too run on
Not looking around having fun
Engaged in a running race
with Time
None has time to stop and stare
All around the same haste
to ejaculate

KALA PUVAN

A POEM BY
KALA PUVAN
Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

Darkness, the other side of Light lies widespread
as book unwritten.
For the poem that the pen of heavy silence is to write
The blowing wind stands as witness
For penning the sorrows and sufferings of Life
and the ensuing pain and anguish
Teary pillows offer writing pads.
Thick brushes are in readiness to paint pictures
The painting brush and the hero come hurrying
to find place in the writings of books
Nights with sparrows huddling inside the nests
stand shrouded in snow.
The vanished shadows of the all too tall trees
blending with the dark watch amused.
Stars a few here and there
winking in the New Moon sky
and so wander floating.
For writing tragic epics candles
give minimal light.
Though long tales the tragic ones
shrink into short stories
in the dark.
In the harems of royal palaces
even in light-filled nights
No tale of tears is being penned by
Queens.
The tales some servant maids tell
are shared in the daylight.
In the dark of night tales of tears alone
have the power to turn into epics.
Those tales torn hailed as flowers forever
are but tales written during heavy nights
in the pages of History.
Amen.

CHOZHAN VAALARIVAN

TWO POEMS BY
CHOZHAN VAALARIVAN
Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(*First Draft)

1. I HAVE CHOSEN MYSELF

I was not one searching for me excluding thee
It was searching for myself that I slowly moved away from thee
I went away not leaving thee
But to return to the place lost to me
You didn’t make me wholesome
That’s true
But you made me aware that I lay scattered
Your silence didn’t pain me
That gave space for my thoughts to sleep
During those days when we were in close proximity
I was a little away from me.
You didn’t notice it.
And I too didn’t want to take note of it.
Your body didn’t hide my loneliness.
It made me forget it momentarily
Your eyes didn’t seek me
And I had begun to search for myself
In them
I don’t love you
It’s true
When I was with thee
I was in love with the I the human
He lost thee
And I slowly regained myself
~

2. ONE’S CALM ANOTHER’S CONVENIENCE
When they attacked me
I remained calm.
That I didn’t say anything
They used it to suit their purpose.
My silence didn’t turn into forgiveness
Nor it had transformed them
It had merely turned into a convenient habit
for them.
It was on that day
I realized _
The meaning of calm
not to all one and the same.

NESAMITRAN

A POEM BY

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan( *First Draft)
They who give gifts after tearing off the price-tag
They who even at the height of anger
utter not a word abusing one’s
character and conduct
They who availing permission
go donate blood every month without fail.
Those who seek forgiveness innocuously
to make a fight cease to be.
They who wander in search of button
for the fallen eye of the gifted teddy bear
and have it stitched
They who heartily laugh
even before the sob subsides
Who even after the selling of wagon
preserve the key-chain
Who even before peace-making process begins
get reconciled
They who yield at once
Not knowing pretence
The love of These Lot
knows not Defeat.

MULLAI AMUTHAN

TWO POEMS BY
MULLAI AMUTHAN

Rendered in English by Latha Ramakrishnan(First Draft)

(1)

When the pet-cat on my lap
climbed down and made its exit
It shed off a few of its furs
It was when I set right my dhoti
removing them
She came with a gift-pack
I opened and saw.
It was a lovely Buddha sculpture
In the hands of he
who comes in the dream
with a sharp weapon
its form was nowhere
in what he held.
Why is Buddha changing
every now and then?
Who killed the grand-daughter?
Siddhdartha? or Buddha?
Even in the daughter’s eyes
Answer to me remained absent
as always.

(2)

“Appaachie...” – calling thus
as the grandson neared her
The grandma offered him the
‘Peanut-roll’ kept ready....
When I was a little boy
She used to give me the same thus
Never once had she received money
from me.
Carrying the empty palmyra-tray
She would walk off.
“At least now, take the money, grandma...”
“Oh, no – just go...”
One day , do the last rites for this old woman
having none
and light my funeral pyre, my son.
That would do – Won’t you?”
So telling emphatically
She would tread past and disappear in the dark.
