VAHTILAIPRABHA

Running all over the village

a river with dead fish

For the fish dying

and for floating

the river alone is the cause and reason.

Like mother hen it had

safeguarded the entire region

Real majestic like the elephant

swinging its mammoth earlobes.

The river that ran with swelling belly

like python that had swallowed a deer

knows everything

it is Vairavan who played in the

massive expanse of sand

building castles

is driving the sand-lorry now.

It was Shanmugam who used to deftly catch

the Koravai fish in rock-clefts

who had painted the river

with the wastes of his factory.

The river is aware of everything.

The river that used to roar like a great deluge

and flow so boisterously

Is now lying there as a snake

turning old, emaciated and weak

The river made the ever running man

sit and repose.

He who was resting there

is now running always.

Not just ignoring the river _

but also the fact

that none allows their children

to go anywhere that side

Is also civilization

taught by the river.

ஊரெங்கும் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்தது

மீன்கள் செத்த நதியொன்று

மீன்கள் செத்ததற்கும்

மீன்கள் மிதப்பதற்கும் நதிதான் காரணம்.

பெட்டைக்கோழிபோல

ஊரை அடைகாத்த நதியது.

மடல் விரித்தாடும் யானைபோன்ற

கம்பீரமான நதியது.

மானை விழுங்கிய மலைப்பாம்புபோல

வயிறு பெருத்தோடிய நதிக்கு

எல்லாம் தெரியும்.

பெருமணற்பரப்பில்

வீடுகட்டி விளையாடிய வைரவன் தான்

மணல் லாரி ஓட்டுகிறான்.

பாறையிடுக்குக் கொறவை மீன்களை

வாவகமாகப் பிடித்த சண்முகம்

தன் தொழிற்சாலைக் கழிவுகளால்

நதிக்கு வர்ணம் பூசியவன்.

எல்லாம் நதிக்குத் தெரியும்.

பெருவெள்ளமென ஆர்ப்பரித்து

ஆரவாரம் செய்த நதியிப்போது

வயது முதிர்ந்து மெலிந்து தளர்ந்து

படமெடுக்க முடியாமல் சுருண்டு கிடக்கும்

பாம்புபோலக் கிடக்கிறது.

ஓடிக்கொண்டிருப்பவனை

உட்காரவைத்தது நதி.

உட்கார்ந்தவன் இப்போது

ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறான்.

நதியைப் புறக்கணிக்கச் செய்வது மட்டுமல்ல

இப்போது பிள்ளைகளை

அந்தப் பக்கம் செல்ல

யாரும் அனுமதிப்பதேயில்லை என்பதும்

நதி கற்றுத்தந்த நாகரிகம்தான்.
